You’re Never Too Old for Trick-or-Treating

How old is too old to go trick-or-treating? When you become a teenager, there is some notion that makes you believe you are too old to enjoy dressing up and getting free candy. This may come from peers that pressure you into thinking that trick-or-treating is for “babies” or even your parents thinking you’re too old to knock on random doors. But why should there be some made-up age limit? Is it for safety reasons? Or just some arbitrary rule that was put into motion and has taken hold of everyone’s minds?

Most people just think about the age question in a theoretical sense. However, in some U.S. States there are laws that enforce age limits upon trick-or-treaters. For example, Chesapeake, Virginia limits the trick-or-treat age to kids 12 and under, and older trick-or-treaters can actually be charged with a misdemeanor and fined up to $100.

Luckily in Arkansas, you can ask yourself if age should be a factor in the grand scheme of trick-or-treating. Many parents would prefer it if their teenagers would go out trick-or-treating instead of having to worry about their safety in some other place.

Catherine Newman, a writer featured on the Today Show, has a couple factors that older kids should keep in mind if they decide to go trick-or-treating.

· Don’t wear a costume that is too scary

· Don’t knock at people’s doors too late

· And be polite

The most important thing to remember is that your age shouldn’t matter when it comes to trick-or-treating! (At least in Arkansas). If dressing up and getting free candy appeals to you then go for it, and don’t let others try to convince you otherwise!

Just remember, have fun, be kind, and be safe!
