Today is Book Lovers Day!

We asked our staff to tell us about one of their favorite books in honor of the holiday. Here are their responses!

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
First off – DINOSAURS. That alone wins it major points. It’s also a very fun piece of speculative sci-fi with plenty of genetic engineering and scientific espionage. It also reads like the “Director’s Cut” version of the movie – plenty of exciting scenes that didn’t make it into the film, such as a T-Rex swimming like a crocodile after a group of characters floating down a river! Can you imagine?! Also, this book created Ian Malcolm, one of the best characters ever.

Artificial Condition: A Murderbot Diary by Martha Wells
I love this book because it has snarky humor, lots of action, and leaves you wanting more. It also makes you think about deeper issues like what makes us human and how we treat sentient beings. There are four books in the Murderbot series with more to come, which makes me very happy!

Jordan, Marketing Coordinator:

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
I read through this whole series so quickly, and could reread it at any point. It combines all of my favorite things in a book: love triangles, faeries and flawless universe-building. After a chance hunt where she accidentally kills a faerie, Feyre is kidnapped by Tamlin, High Lord of the Spring Court. Stockholm Syndrome ensues as Feyre begins to fall for Tamlin. As she learns more and more about the world of Fae, she discovers the threat that comes to their world. Sarah J. Maas easily transports you into the continent of Prythian and leaves you wanting to be a part of the Night Court. Each character is multifaceted and keeps the entire story exciting!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Pink by Brenden Fletcher, Kelly Thompson, and Tini Howard
I have been a fan of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers since the age of three so I was very excited when Boom Comics announced that they were creating Power Ranger comics and the original Pink Ranger had her own story arc (5 comic issues total). It takes place after Kimberly has passed on her powers so you don’t have to know everything about Power Rangers. I highly recommend this graphic novel.

Watching You by Lisa Jewell
It was such a well-written mystery. The author knows how to keep you strung along and the ending is the biggest shocker that you will either hate or love. I loved it!

Just One Damned Thing After Another by Jodi Taylor
I love it because it has a little bit of everything! It has SciFi/Mystery/Romance! It is set in the future, but reads like it could be today. The main setting is St. Mary’s Institute of Historical Research. The historians use “pods” to travel to the time they are studying. It’s a super fun series that triggers all of your emotions!

The Nyxia Triad by Reintgen
This is a compelling sci-fi series with great world-building and complex characters. Highly recommended!

Courting Darkness by Robin LaFevers
The 4th book in the series is about trained assassin nuns in medieval Brittany/France. Officially, they are dedicated to St. Mortain, but in truth, they worship him as one of the old gods. One of the nuns is assigned to be a lady’s maid to the Duchess of Brittany, and she is constantly fighting her family and her past life with them. A younger novice has spent years in the French court undercover, and is now trying to find out why she has heard nothing from the convent in years.

The Courtship of Princess Leia by Dave Wolverton
After Leia receives a marriage request from the powerful prince of the neutral Hapes Consortium, she’s divided between her love for Han and her duty to the New Republic. Han, revering under pressure to the criminal instincts of his past, kidnaps Leia and spirits her away to the remote planet of Dathomir. They soon find themselves stranded groundside with Luke Skywalker obliged to come to the rescue.

Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers
This is my favorite book ever! It’s about how to forgive yourself from past sins and forgive the people that have hurt you.

Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart
Has got to be one of my top picks! It’s a historical fiction set in the early 1900’s. “A fresh spin on classic cop-and-crook.”

Jessica, Tween Librarian:

Sanity and Tallulah by Molly Brooks
Asking a librarian for their favorite book is like asking for their favorite child (or cat!). One of my favorite books from 2018 is Sanity and Tallulah by Molly Brooks. It’s a grade school graphic novel about two girls who lose their three-headed cat (named Sparkle Princess Destroyer of Worlds) on their spaceship. Life support wires on the ship get chewed up so the ship starts malfunctioning and is close to blowing up! Everyone blames the girls and their cat, but the girls know it couldn’t be their cat’s fault! They have to find the cause and reverse it before their spaceship explodes. I love that this book features smart girls who love science and their fabulous three-headed cat.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder by Joanne Fluke
A small town may not seem like an exciting place to read about but when it turns out a murder has been committed it is intriguing. Follow Hannah Swensen through her daily routine as a small business owner/baker, daughter, sister and single woman to learn how she uncovers what really happened in her otherwise peaceful town.
